List of Kato DCC ready frames
« on: June 29, 2023, 05:56:28 PM »

I recently purchased a Kato 176-3107 SD45 C&NW #6568 and found the frame was not DCC ready. This was a bit of a surprise, but I accepted the challenge and spent a few hours with a dremel tool and be came one with the frame. My question ... is there a list of Kato locomotives that are/are not DCC ready?

Generally speaking, if it is in a blue box/insert, it is not dcc ready frame.  Green inserts are except for a few models released around the time of switch.

I know thats not exactly what you were looking for but it's a standard I usually use when shopping ebay or train shows.

Thanks!
It will help with reducing the surprise factor.

Also DCC ready doesn't automatically mean DCC-sound ready (as in having ample room for a speaker and enclosure).  Just wanted to mention that.

Would anyone happen to know the manufacture date of Kato's  SD40   Stock #176-2000?

Give spookshow's website a try.  It is a great resource.  Here is the SD40 page: http://spookshow.net/loco/katosd4045.html

Is there a cross reference anywhere that tells me, for example, if a frame on a Kato SD unit will fit a Kato E8. My ultimate goal is a DCC/Sound E8 in IC colors, and I was hoping I could start with a donor frame and E8 shell, and repaint as necessary.

Well, all Kato E8/9 frames are DCC ready. You only need to make room for the speaker, but in this case it is not a big deal.

The installation is a bit older. Meanwhile there is a Kato wide body sound decoder available from ESU which should fit nicely.

Yes,  the ESU's new decoder is (except for making room for a speaker/enclosure) a plug-n-play install.
