I was going to suggest Hickory Creek, or did that only survive because of Ringling Brothers Circus..

Similarly Milwaukee's Cedar Rapids survived because of CN if I'm not mistaken...

Now that I'm home from work, I'm going to try to find group photos of these sets and do a little cut and paste..

Most railroads had reached the consensus that observation cars were a pain in the :ashat: by the late/mid 1960's, so we can thank a literal circus (Hickory Creek) and a private owner (Sandy Creek) for saving the Creek series observations from being scrapped.

Kato has a good number of existing cars and clowns in their marketing department to do a circus train :D

Here's a roster of cars they bought from UP, some being exact matches to cars Kato already has:

Has anyone heard anything more about KATO doing a UP yellow/gray version of the Olympic Hiawatha? It keeps coming up from time to time, but no announcement.
Thanks

That would be great!  But then I remember that it will be Kato's UP Orange and Gray and then I get sad.

"Day One" was IMO not very attractive livery. I was not even aware of it. I'm glad it didn't last long.
The subsequent "broken arrow" scheme with orange nose was more attractive.

Was that loco ex. PC?  That would explain why it was black.

AFAIK Day One AMTK 461 <- AMTK 322 <- AMTK 4316 <- PC 4316 <- PRR 5716A

As it stands, you could buy all 7 of these trains and a few phase 1 Amtrak cars and put together 9-10 'rainbow train sets'

Actually, no rainbow era train is complete without Big Sky Blue cars. AND cars from the North Coast Limited.

Both are a must for any rainbow era train.

I would buy the Penn Central offering from Kato if they had it done like the 1st run - just Penn Central. But I don't want all 8 cars. Sigh. I don't get what Kato is doing.

Cheers,

Javier

This is what I call a filler set from Kato!  All their resources went into the big boy. They need a few other sets to fill the gap between the big boy and their next brand new offering. Either way it is a win for me when they do this.  Either I get funds freed up for other items outside of my usual purchases from other companies or I get to pick up something from Kato’s filler run!

Any time Kato wants to produce their original smooth-side passenger cars - along with matching A-B-A or A-B-B-A F7 locos - in the NP Lowey two-tone green paint scheme would be fine with me.  Good enough, so no new tooling required.
14 cars would do nicely.  One four-car set with RPO, baggage, diner and observation cars. Another with four dome cars. Plus, a six-car set with three each of coaches and sleepers.
I realize that RailSmith is working on this, but I'd prefer something I can buy all at once, not piecemeal over the course of a decade.

I need to order the Railsmith domes for NP and GN, but would buy a Kato set of both if released. I have the original Kato sets, but have retired them for the Railsmith cars.  As long as Kato puts road numbers or names on the sets I am good.
