I remember a freeware geared specifically to 3d figure modeling but, as it always happens, now I can't find it when I want it.  Suggestions?

But possibly DAZ 3d - https://www.daz3d.com/  Haven't been there in a long time but IIRC the software is free, they sell people and clothing, scenery, etc.
Poser is another but I don't remember if there is a free version or not.  https://www.posersoftware.com/

I appreciate the response.  For my autism-stratified memory, sometimes asking about what I've forgotten out loud helps jar my memory into remembering bread crumbs to follow (it's like regression therapy, I guess), if not the answer I sought. After you responded I remembered I had seen the program in a post here on TRW, and that helped me focus my Boolean search skills, and I found the thread I was looking for, and the freeware - MakeHuman.

I think what you are looking for is MakeHuman. http://www.makehumancommunity.org/

It is a very flexible program with a fairly good support community to build figures. You can also use Blender to modify the models. It's freeware.

I am struggling to get it installed. I am still not that knowledgeable about installing on Linux Mint with anything other than a Deb package or from Flathub. Tar packages and this one make me feel like Pete the Puma.
