At the time, Arnold also used steel for their rail, as I recall.

Yes they did, and while they blackened it, the rail would still rust.  I still have some Arnold steel rail from the late 1960s, but it is not in use.   ;)

Somebody else (Minitrix, if I remember right) also used steel rail for a short period.  Back in the 70s I found a piece of sectional track, just laying on the ground, and was very surprised that it was magnetic.

Who loses one piece of track in the middle of a vacant lot?

We have again, in a typical TRW fashion have made a leaping OT thread excursion.  :)

Yes, Minitirix did make steel N scale track. I still have several pieces of their steel flex track. I don't even remember how I acquired it.

Arnold also made blackened steel rails which had a unusual cross section.
