How about just getting some decent looking strips of wood, cutting to shelf length, and putting a slit in them that fits over the glass, then using something like silicone to stick them in place?
A table saw or radial arm saw (in rip mode) would be needed to make the slits. Wood could be anything from stained pine to oak, walnut, cherry or mahogany.
Doing it that way would look nice and at the same time allow you to make your "fence" as high as you feel you need. (Nothing is going to work for the magnitude 9+ event, though.)
