Few years ago someone here mentioned this type of 3D printing, and was even getting ready to offer that service to the modelers.  Well, they sort of faded away.  Interesting to see a mainstream  printing service now offering similar type of printing.

Pete,

I believe you are referring to Dan (i.e., Railwire user onionfield), the CEO of the now shuttered Out of the Box Models.

Yes!  Thanks for refreshing my memory.

I see this as a good way to do a few things:

Couplers, trucks and other detail parts in natural rust color.

Ties in natural color.

Engine and car shells in a base color similar to the intended paint color - this would reduce the visibility of possible paint chips.

Engine and car shells in a natural rust color - this could open up interesting weathering ideas.

Small, thin details in an opaque color.

But my biggest hope is that the surface detail is better than FUD or whatever they call it now.
There's a shyness found in reason
Apprehensive influence swallow away
You seem to feel abysmal take it
Then you're careful grace for sure
Kinda like the way you're breathing
Kinda like the way you keep looking away
