Sad, but not unexpected. NS inherited numerous dark territories from Southern, so warrant operation on moderately-trafficked lines is old hat.

I'd like to get my hands on one or two of those triple-heads, but I know from local experience they have contractors lined up for removal within days if not hours from decommissioning.

Just what the NS needs, more dark territory.  One of the reasons railroads were forced to adopt PTC were trains running into one another in dark territory with the NS leading the pack (although they do have the most dark territory so...).  I wonder how they are going to afford to keep the PTC infrastructure running if they can't afford to keep simple signal systems going?

Maybe they're developing rolling blocks like the BNSF is doing? I think UP is trying to develop a similar system, too.

I believe part of the stated goals of PTC is to eliminate wayside signals everywhere someday. Probably after they eliminate all the people from the cab...
