...and that is why lane pavement stripes were invented.
I've always been amazed watching footage of times when horse drawn transportation commingled with automobiles and payed close attention to the reaction of the horses as autos cut them off in traffic.
I'm sure some horses wished that they had middle fingers.

Yeah, astoundingly chaotic traffic. People seemed to have a much tighter sense of their "bubble" than we do today. Also, nearly everybody was dressed to the nines. No sweatpants or pajamas seen anywhere!

Notice the cars are right-hand drive!

It's wild watching that horse drawn carriage in front of the camera early in the video, as the carriage's wheels keep dropping into the flangeways and how the carriage jerks sideways to get out of the flangeways when the carriage is turned.

I like the car on the wrong side of the road at 6:32 as he's begging for a head-on crash, until another driver moves over.

Cool.  8)

Note:
This is actually a staged shoot, so it's not actual traffic from that time:
– The film records a total of thirty cable cars, four horsecars, and four streetcars. At first there also appear to be many automobiles; however, a careful tracking shows that almost all of the autos circle the camera many times—one of them ten times. This traffic was apparently staged by the producer to give Market Street the appearance of a prosperous modern boulevard with many automobiles.

Yeah that "4867" marker plate keeps showing up throughout the film.

Chaotic traffic still exists today.  Just look up "chaotic traffic intersection" on YouTube.  Here are couple.

The red part is the youtube channels editorializing a bit beyond what the source says.  Basically the traffic is real, except where "enhanced" by the autos.   I've also speculated that the movie camera itself being as novel as an automobile in those days, the autos may have been circling back to oggle the camera even if not coordinated ahead of time.  Not sure anyone really knows.

Ok, whatever words you use, the video certainly does not represent "typical" auto traffic of the day. Heck, the Model T wasn't yet a thing.  :D

Ten times for that one car seems a little more than curious.   ;)
