They say the prototype roads lost box cars all the time with their tracking systems.  I bet most LHS do the same!  That is why I am impressed with the few that have the real time websites, like Model Train Stuff.  I actually placed an order once, went back to shopping and found the item had gone from 1 in stock to zero......

MTS Is actually very lucky: there's lots of good solutions out there for pure online retailing, where your inventory only changes if someone buys it online.

The real difficulty for most hobby shops is their multi-channel nature: they have to keep the website up to date with not only what happens on it but also at the POS terminal. That's typically what adds a 0 or two to the implementation costs for an online storefront.

MBK solved the problem by completely segregating their inventories, but that was only possible because of their warehouse:storefront ratio which, again, most hobby shops don't have.

"solved"   ;)

Ultimately, they solved it by closing the retail store. :|

There's only a handful of stores that I would like to visit. This is one and very high up on the list. I'm planing a RR related Colorado vacation...soon, and a visit is in the schedule.

My daughters wedding brought me to Denver for a week. My son and I managed to sneak off today for a trip to the Colorado Railroad Museum and then N Scale Supply.
Being from the Chicago area, I’m spoiled by some excellent shops, but I was blown away here. Without a doubt the best N scale selection I’ve ever seen, particularly things such as detail parts, structure kits, and other incidentals. Excellent DCC stock also.
You Denver guys are fortunate. My wallet would take a beating if I was local to this place.
