The Darjeeling railroad has a few loops like that and I've seen them modeled.

The Morenci Southern, in SE Arizona was a copper mining narrow gauge railroad and was known as the corkscrew.

If you think about it, for a mining railroad, digging tunnels isn’t exactly a huge problem.

Actually he did, that's the problem.  He should have put his trailing foot down first.
