Organizing photos

I've taken lots of photos over the years of trains, and am now trying to get the collection organized. I probably have over a thousand prints. My question to you all is, how do you organize your photo collection? And does anybody know of a photo safe pen for writing on the back of photos? I seem to recall that there were special pens for that purpose but I haven't had luck finding one.

If your photos are printed on RC paper, i.e., resin coated, which have been in use for the 40+ years unless you print your own using real paper, a simple Sharpie would work.  The back is simply "plastic".I

If it's real paper, you can want something that's archival acid free.
