Back in active service as of this week is Southern Shorthaul Railroad's CLP12 seen last week in Cootmundra, New South Wales  - image taken by SSR driver and maintainer Kev Schultz and posted with permission.

After quite a few years stored outside in the elements, former Commonwealth Railways, Australian National, Genesee & Wyoming Australia, and Aurizon, CLP12 is now with its fifth owner, Southern Shorthaul Railroad. Its coat of white primer has seen it nicknamed "Casper' and an appropriate decal has been been added to the side. It still needs a number of cab features re-installed before it can lead, and it will eventually be repainted in SSR house colours.

I've always been curious why EMD went with angled carbodies behind rounded faces. Do you happen to know?

It was. The gang washed it that afternoon after it was dropped off at the museum.

Can only assume it was something to do with the smaller Australian loading gauge. In Oz it was only when for the first 17 that had rounded faces, the first with 645s in them. The angled side carried through with subsequent less rounded cab designs up until 1992.

As built in the early 70s that was their original location. When re-built by MK in 1993 they were placed out of sight behind the cow-catcher, though were susceptible to getting clogged up with sand, dirt and road-kill.

SSR have taken the step of putting them back where they should be :P

They can't go on the roof because of loading gauge restrictions, especially under overhead wires.

A second loco appeared in white-primer today and eventually a total of 4 of the class will be reactivated. They will probably be re-painted in company colours later in the year.

I feel sorry for the crews. Its bad enough when you have a bell on the front of a cab...  :scared:
The Railwire is not your personal army.
