Need help selecting motor /W gear head

Last Sun I won a FED brass HOn3 4-4-0 . It runs about as well as any 70's era brass loco . I'd like to give it a 12 volt can type motor with a 4 to 1 gear head . I have at the most a space of 10mm x 28mm in the tender . Can someone steer me towards a make and model and a place to buy it ?  I was looking last night on the interweb and saw a lot of motors on ebay but not really what I'm looking for . I found a Fallhabor site , but it just had tech stuff and not any info on specific models . TIA !  ....Mike

just curious as to why you want / need a gear head ??
i -assume- that you have already determined the maximum motor rpm needed ??

I'm guessing the stock FED gear ratio is about 15:1.  Putting a 4:1 gearhead on it would make it 100:1.

You know what. There is a guy on youtube that messes with these. He even rigged up a servo to the bell.

This is the guy I was thinking of. Maybe message him and see what he used:

I thought most people put motors in the tender of these, but I never had one myself.

Would it? Wouldn’t 15:1 and 4:1 make 60:1 rather than 100:1?

The stock motor is a typical 70's open frame . I have gotten it to run pretty good , but low speed isn't great . I wonder if a non sound dcc decoder could tweak it , maybe a kick start setting or bemf setting would help . There's not much room in there .... In the 1998 sept/oct Gazette there is a wright up by someone used a gear head motor . The end result was it being able to pull 7 cars up a 3.5 grade .  And of course I cant find the motor and the hobby shop is gone ,it seems .  I'll have to look at the vid and try to contact the poster . He used a motor from Loco Doc / Round Bell hobbies . If I remember right the Doc has passed , and the Guy running Round Bell is hard to reach ....Mike

Sept 98 Gazette shows how to put a gearhead motor in the tender. Used a Faulhaber 1219 with a 4:1 gearhead.

OK I found the US supplier for Faulhaber is Micromo www.micromo.com nice website but I havent checked prices yet .  Reason being is I found a German hobby retailer that had the correct kit I need for 52 bucks + shipping . They also have a lot of other conversion kits . Stoner Creek Models http://www.stonercreek.de/en/engl/remotoring_kits/pricelist_HO-HOn3_remotde.html  . Shipping isn't too bad either ......Mike

Either way still a good price. I think used motors plus gearhead were around $75 back when Eldon was alive.
