Challenges from a different point of view

As we head into a new year and a new decade I thought it might be educational and motivational for us to lay out what we each want to accomplish in the next year. I’m not asking for a 47 point detailed list (though I am sure @peteski has one) - rather this your place to be aspirational and motivational. I put this under Challenges as a way to remind us all that we have the same time/use ratio issues to face. My hope is we can get a good set of lists going and maybe even get each other supported and inspired.

Me:

- Install the first two sections of benchwork.
- wire it up
- Install track
-JFRT
- Get my spray booth and airbrush sorted so I can get back to modeling.

For me:

1.  Build and install Trout Lake water tank between Ophir and Lizard Head (Durango Press kit, already on hand).
2.  Build and install Primos Chemical Company ore bin/loader (the one they shipped uranium ore from) near Placerville (Timberline kit, already on hand).
-- Considering installing a very short siding for this even though the prototype didn't load directly to rail.
3.  Build 2 C&S/RGS Phase III steel underframe boxcars (Grandt Line kits, already on hand).
4.  Build RGS baggage/combine 257 kitbashed from MRGS coach kit (already have kit and parts on hand).
5.  Built D&RGW combine 212 and D&RGW Chili Line short RPO (MRGS kits, already on hand).
6.  Scratchbuild Rico bunkhouse.
7.  Paint, install DCC/sound in RGS T-19 4-6-0 #25, PSC brass
8.  Repair running gear, install DCC/sound in RGS T-19 4-6-0 #20, Erie Limited brass
9.  Build my HOn3 Scotch Creek module for my club (SlimRail).

Actually, I don't. I'm not into New Years Resolutions or into making plans.   I do sometimes write list of things to do, but those are not model-related.

As far as modeling goes, my perpetual "plan" is to work on, and catch up on all the projects I have in-progress (there are quite a few), and to stop taking on new projects (mine and/or for others) while placing my older projects on-hold. I need to prioritize better, and learn to say "no" when I'm approached with a new project for someone else.

Can you help me with a project to make a 47-point detailed project list?

Not one to make new year resolutions, either, but I do have some wanna-dos for 2020, mostly as objectives to display at the UPHS convention in late May. It's in Cheyenne this year, one of the three or four "regular" convention locations we can reasonably drive to.

1) Finish the C855 ABA set that's been mouldering on my bench for over a year;
2) Finish the Kelso depot;
3) Build a diorama to show off the recent signal work.

If I get any one of those three done I'll be elated. Shaping-up the layout for the NMRA convention in July is mostly off the table... if I entertain any visitors during the event, it's clearly going to be WYSIWYG.

1) Get plans for addition drawn up
2) Get estimates to construct addition
3) Get permits for said addition
4) Once addition gets go ahead, renovate garage into finished basement
5) Plan CSX Hanover Sub 3.0
6) Begin construction on CSX Hanover Sub 3.0
7) Begin destruction on CSX Hanover Sub 2.0 as parts are needed/can be reused on 3.0
8) Remodel current area that 2.0 resides in, to have a proper shop/work area, crew area, living space.

Finish my layout.  I think it is actually possible even at my pace.

1: Be less annoying

2: Learn to Handlay Track

3: Learn advanced layout wiring.

4: Finish a layout for once.

5: Learn 3d Modelling.

I already have an Excel project list with 100+ items on it and a considerable number of them marked for 2019 and 2020. The top priorities are ones that have been hanging around for far too long:

1. Finish "bump out" benchwork, track & wiring modifications
2. Complete NW Ice & Cold Storage & Duncan-Hudson buildings to paint stage
3.Wire up the hex frog juicer for the east end Brooklyn Yard terminal
4. Fix track interface issues at removable staging yard
5. Install Blue Points for Haig/Brooklyn Yard interlocking (where single main track becomes two main tracks) and investigate continuing conductivity issues with nearby Portland Gas & Coke spur ; may require switch replacement.
6. Complete W & E ends of the Steel Bridge
7. Complete scenery around W & E Steel Bridge approaches

I suppose a good start will be to sell more stuff than I buy, and only buy things that fit my peculiar needs.
Next would be to work on finishing the Retro Layout to a higher degree to enjoy photographing my fleet of old junk.
Third, I'd like to do another set of TTrak modules in time for NSW in Altoona.

If there's time, I'd like to get involved with an operating group again.

I actually got a jump on things and started yesterday.  Replaced an old florescent fixture in the basement that had a burned out ballast and took odd sized lamps.  Next is some basic lighting (will be LED fixtures) in the future layout area, and proper handrail for the stairs.  The big spring project will be drywall.  I need to hold a family reunion, and use the day to get the adult kids to move all the sheetrock for me.  Hopefully also get at least a start on the first several sections of the layout.  (all my layouts have been modular or sectional- makes moving a lot less traumatic)

My goal is to stop acumulating locomtives without decoders and instead accumulate, and install, decoders I already have.
