ESU 73836 crashes NCE PowerCab

I installed the subject board in an Atlas GP-9 and it kept crashing my NCE Powercab. I took it out and hooked it to the tester and the same thing happens. I don’t have JMRI or an ESU programmer yet, I was hoping to get one or two diesel installs done before investing in those.


Sorry for the ticking clock.

Any help would be appreciated.

Is it just me, or is your track1 connected to the motor clip?  Hard to tell in the vid

What happens when you take the track power leads from the Power Cab and short them together?  That won't damage the Power Cab (it has a short circuit protection). Will Power Cab behave the same way?

If yes, then I suspect the decoder is internally shorted. If you have an ohmmeter, it will probably read zero ohms between right and left rail contacts.

I'm with Pete.  I think you have an internal short in the decoder.  I had that happen once on a decoder I was installing; it would shut down the LokProgrammer.  Thankfully, ESU recognized that the decoder was defective, and they replaced it for free.

I think you guys are right. I suspected a short, that’s why I pulled it out of the chassis. I will send them in. Thanks for the feedback.

I got what I suspect are new replacement decoders back from ESU today. Quick turnaround, kudos! @esullc
