I finally got around to getting all my supplies in hand and found some time to work on them.

First I remade all of my tabs, this time I used 3/16" "I" beams instead of the "C" channels.
Main reason for this is every time I dropped one, it invariably landed face down, grrrr! 

Then I read the post where @shark_jj printed his labels, so I gave it a try and found it much easier than painting the tabs.  Thanks for posting that.
I drew them up with CorelDraw so they'd fit the 3/16" "I" beams and printed them off.







Later I was chatting with a friend about the tabs for the empty open hoppers, what he came up with was just too obvious.
I used some rectangular tubing as follows
