Cast resin SP GS-1 build.

Yet another Jason cast resin build.

Doing a bit of trade work with a friend for a Key SP AC-6 that he also sent with the casting.

Engine chassis is the Pennsy BLI M1b, tender is a converted Kato Daylight GS-4.

Ready to paint, then attempt to place all the electronics from the Pennsy long haul tender in the Kato one, pack, stack & rack !

After cutting 1/4" off the rear engine chassis to have room to CA glue my 0090 threaded styrene block on the inside back of the engine cab for the draw bar attachment, I wondered if my Jason cast resin build of the SP Streamlined MT4 would also fit the chassis, then just changing the rear truck to a single axle for the Mountain.
Big surprise, it fit like a glove !

Wow, looks really sharp!
Never knew Jason did a GS-1 casting. Was this a recent casting, or one from a few years back? I have some of his castings from about 6 years ago, and they don't look as "crisp" as this. I presume he did the tender as well?
Look forward to seeing your progress....

Actually I don't know when Jason made the casting, but originally I think the tender he cast for it was a Vanderbilt.
Jesse wanted the GS-4 type tender from actual pictures he sent me, I also used HO brass pictures of the GS-1 with that type tender.
Only thing on Jason's casting was there was only one side pump, all HO brass pictures I used showed two, so I made a mold from another engine for casting them.

HI Ernie and Mike,

I can answer your questions. I too purchased a GS1 casting from Jason. The photo I took when the parts came in is dated 3/18/2015. It has a Vandy tender with it. He recommended the B'man J Class, so I purchased one. After seeing your post Ernie, I wish I had the M1 chassis. I started the project but let it "go to rest" as I have been spending way too much time on club layout. That may change soon.

I did one of his AC-9's to completion and have a 2nd one and another EM1 for a 2nd AC9. I need to get my rear end in gear.

Nice looking loco Ernie.

Thanks Carl.

I had forgot Jason also liked using the Spectrum Class J.
I bought several extras for certain builds, actually was the preferred choice for the MT4 as you'd never get the electronics from the BLI M1 in a Vanderbilt tender.  Just a lot of chassis milling to do on the J.
That's what Phillip Johnson used to build his.

Actually, Jason's AC-9 has to be the easiest of all to build. On the casting from the brass one, the front of the firebox curved under the chassis but needed to be cut off to fit the EM1 chassis. So I sanded the back sides of them to shape, painted them and CA'ed them on the engine chassis.

Stop talking about Jason! Threads like this remind me how much I miss having him and his incredible talents around. I was lucky enough to get a GS-2 and an AC-9 from him but he was eventually supposed to also do a whaleback tender and the SP smoke lifter that I still want (no, NEED). I know he's moved on to other hobbies, but he was a great talent and is missed.

TXed Jason last night and told him I posted some of his builds I was working on, told him how much everybody here missed him being around.
He called me today, said he got on while we were talking checking them out.
Said he was really obsessed with making steamer molds as well as the building of them, but said he also gets into other things and gets obsessed with them, right now its building and racing motorcycles.
He knows that I also do the same thing and knows I understand what he means.
Eventually the motorcycle obsession will wear out and I look for him to get back into trains and casting again.  As he did mention most of his molds went bad and he will need to make new ones.
Just a matter of time.

Hopefully @Chris333 will recognize I'm joking in tagging him on this post.   :D

2. I get the building motorcycles thing, my old 5.0 Mustang wound up in a magazine...

Outstanding build!!
Not to pick nits - but, the GS-1 tender is from a GS-2.

And - I too miss Jason's fine castings

To round out my SP GS fleet - I need a GS1, GS7 and GS8 (These were ex Cotton Belt locomotives)

Thanks, for posting your awesome work -- looking forward to their completion!!

Jason had a lot of other engines he wanted to cast, too bad they never came about.
The last engine I remember Jason making was the SP 4-6-2 P-10, but I don't think it was ever cast.

Yeah, the GS-1 tender is quite a bit different, but he sent the Kato GS-4 tender with the engine casting and just said make what changes you can.
