Kato RSC-2 in N. What would it take to make an RS2?

Greetings all,

Actually had a train show in Gastonia, NC today.  Fairly small but only $5 to get in.  Happens tomorrow 6-9-19 starting at 11AM too.

To the point.  Picked up an RSC-2 in un-decorated condition for a good price .  It runs quite well.  Besides changing trucks what would it take to make it an RS2.  I have visions of converting this to a Rock Island RS unit.

Yep, my trusty old copy of the Diesel Spotters Guide says (of RSC-2 and RSC-3) "Same as for RS-2 and RS-3 above the running boards."

Why not just get either a Kato RS2 or Walthers RS2?

I’m assuming we are talking about the Kato model, rather than the vintage Atlas model from the late 1960s. From what I remember, the data sheet in the box shows a combined exploded parts diagram for the Kato RS2 and RSC2. For the model, it might be only the trucks that are different. You might be fortunate to find the trucks still available for purchase on the Kato parts website.

Good morning all,

I was leaving the show and I spotted it on a table next to where this guy had three of the two axle RS units running.  He offered me this one for $20.  Oh why not.  I'm pretty good with an airbrush so I figured I could not go too far wrong with maroon or black paint and some decals.  I did not notice the three axle set up immediately but it ran well forwards and backwards on the test oval.  I didn't want to do Milwaukee Rd. or UP (Actual RSC-2 users) as they do not fit my locale on my layout.

Looked like parts were available as of yesterday.

Pretty sure Atlas AAR-B trucks will work. They have both roller bearing and friction bearing types available.

No, they will not, totally different gear tower.
