Hi all,

Have any of the forum members had any success in milling Kato sd40-2 mechanism frames for a smaller fuel tank .

Like the Milwaukee road had on their sd40-2s .

Yours Alex

This interests me as well for my SD38-2 conversions. I saw reference to it being done in a magazine article a few years ago but it didn’t reveal any info about how it was done. Only that you must avoid grinding away the motor mount slots.

I milled the frame of a SD 9 for @dmidkiff for a custom tank.

Send me a PM if you need it done.

I have done over a dozen of them. Somewhere I have photos of what I did. Or, You can take the easy way out and contact Intermountain for their short tanks, which would be appropriate for Milw. Soo, as well as SD38-2s.

It’s not too tough. You just have to be careful how much frame material you remove. Cut the end of the plastic tank off and shorten to your liking.

BC Hydro SD38-2s had smaller tanks. Not sure of the size but I figured I might use a GP38 tank. Any body know if this is a good choice?
