Digitraxx DT402D replacement plug

DT402D phone style plug broke the lock tab off.  Can this be replaced with a standard phone plug as available at home supply stores?  Anything special to know or special tools needed?

It's the same kind of plug used making a loconet cable.  Same crimper.  Just make sure it's a 6p6c plug and it will work.  If you were here in Saginaw I could replace it for you in about 5 minutes or less - most of the time would be spent digging through my boxes for the plug.  lol

Assuming you don't belong to a club, I would take the throttle to a train show and just ask some of the clubs running layouts.  I'm sure they can put one on at no or nominal cost.

Thanks, all.  I think I got it figured out and will get the tool and some replacement plugs.  It's not too expensive and it seems like a tool to have.  8)

Do you just cut off the old plug and strip new or is there any reason to try to keep the length ?

Yep. Just take the cutters and nip it off right at the plug or, if the plug is gone, just even the ends up.  Strip about 1/4" of the outer insulation of (not the individual wire insulation!) and crimp a new one on.

If you're a Digitrax person then, yes, a crimper and extra plugs are nearly essential at some point.

The crimper that I have and all the ones I've seen have a proper built in stripper.  It strips it to the exact length very easily.

Thanks again, all.  With the advise given and a couple of Youtube videos I think I'm good to go. 8)  For less than $17 I ordered a crimping/ stripping tool and the smallest bag of plugs (50 pcs).  That should get me through. :)

Make sure you attach the new plug the same orientation on the cable as the old.

When I got my DT throttle, it was suggested to make a short extension with an inline coupler and small piece of phone line so the chance of anything breaking would happen to it and not the throttle.

I did exactly what Jason did.  Then I had it converted to a DT402D.  :D
