Good reading on railroading in the UK?

I've started watching this series on Youtube and it's gotten me curious about railroading in the UK.

I'm assuming there's some sort of "general history of railroading in the UK" out there. Does anyone have any recommendations on what that would be?

Well the UK's railroading history can be divided into a few specific eras.
Pre-grouping
Big Four
Nationalization
Privatization

There's enumerous books out there on the various eras, railways, etc.
As for overall railway history of the U.K. I know there are some books out there, but I don't know titles off the top of my head.

I know this sounds wack - about as good as Dr. Hotball's suggestion - but check your local library. Back when I was a pup and beginning to get serious about trains, our library was full of books about railroads... British railroads, nearly exclusively. The one or two volumes on U.S. practice were from Eastern roads' perspective. It was frustrating, actually. Granted, those books were in the (British) Big Four era, so I can't tell you what might be there now.

Anyway, since most public libraries tend to hang on to stuff forever, you might find a starting point there.

Yep, I've got that part down. Thanks to Wikipedia, which is way better than I expected on the subject: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_rail_transport_in_Great_Britain

Greetings from the UK.

If you want a social history this is fascinating:

As a Santa Fe fan I think I actually now know more about US railroads than my own country, but I will ask in other forums and get suggestions.

There is a lot on Youtube, and the best N Gauge forum is: http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/

Almost by accident the UK has a lot of preserved locos  - look up Barry scrapyard.

Best
