What type of wheel bearing is this?

Looking at cars for my future railroad I was looking at this one and noticed the trucks. It looks like a friction bearing truck but there is something up with the bearing. Does it look like a roller bearing is in there?

Yep. Not an uncommon conversion.

It's a solid-bearing truck converted to roller bearing.  These were common in the 1970s.   Kind of cool, as you can see the end of the axle rotating inside the old bearing box, which no longer has its original cover.

Also note the drain holes for water now drilled out of the old journal bearing oil reservoirs.

Yea, these are way overdue..I believe these actually were allowed in service until 1994, extended from an earlier date, if I remember correctly...

This might be something that @Lemosteam could possibly add to his line of 3-D printed items.  But you would then see the pointy N scale metal axle through the journal opening.

It's just an old Bettendorf with the lid removed and a drain hole cut out.

I know they were common through the 70s and into the 80s.  They were being advertised in 1958, with no claim that they were a new product, so I have no idea when they were first used.

The Nevada Northern supposedly had a wreck crane with roller bearings in archbar trucks.  The story was that the WP leased it, and would accept the archbar trucks, but insisted on roller bearings, so the WP shops did the conversion.
