Overall Darkening Prior To Weathering

I would like to darken a model, i.e. apply a wash, prior to applying weathering.  I've tried using acrylic black thinned with water but it just pools up in all the wrong places.  Suggestions?

Get yourself a copy of the Mann's book. He covers all the basics.

He recommends a water mixable oil color instead of acrylics, and they work quite well. You'll obviously need to dullcoat the model first; that alone may take care of your "puddle" issue. Quality brushes are also a big help. (No airbrush here. But a lot of good work can be done without one.)

If you're an old hand and you know all of this, my apologies. FWIW, I've had very acceptable results using some of Tom's techniques. And I have no particular artistic talent for or experience weathering.

Yep Dullcote first. This provides a key for any weathering solution.
I also Dullcote between each layer of weathering after first letting each layer dry thoroughly.

What the crew said above...
I like to apply Dullcote then a some kind of fade with a light color, that works for the base color of what ever you are weathering with an airbrush or cheap craft paints.
I then apply a light wash with Raw Umber water soluble oil paint, if I am going for an overall grimy look. 
I never use straight black.
Always go light to dark, black is too intense and you can't go back if you get too dark.

I think if you don’t have an airbrush, a coat of Dullcote (or Dull Cote) followed by a wash. Probably burnt umber.
