Old Kato F unit

I am in the process of installing a Digitrax hard wire decoder in an old Kato F unit .
The LED  headlight in this unit is installed and almost carved in the half frames .
It will be very difficult to use the same board and cut and solder like they recommended for all other installation I did before .
I an thinking of a new LED stuck directly in the hole of the body .
I could file the front of the round LED flat .
Anybody know the value of the resistor I should use in line ?
Thanks

1000 ohms is always a good average number to use. Most LEDs will be plenty bright with that.
