Con Cor MP15 ?

Hi

I am wondering if someone can kindly give me the distance between truck centres on these and the truck wheelbase?

I'm also wondering how the trucks are designed, if anyone has a shot of one disassembled?

For a scratchbuilding project...

Regards, Ben S.

Hi Ben
I can't confirm the Con-Cor MP-15 truck centre measurement as I don't have one.  However, if it helps, the prototype has a 24'-2" truck centre length.
Cheers

Hi Ben,

According to my bargain-basement digital calipers, the wheelbase is 0.625" (measured between the centres of the dimples in the wipers) and the distance between truck centres is 1.805" (measured between the tops of the wipers)

I can't get you a photo of the trucks but they're broadly similar in design to Atlas GP trucks (albeit with coupler pockets stuck on the ends)

A check with my 1:160 scale rule suggests the wheelbase is around 24 scale feet.

The chassis has a thick shelf (visible in the photo of the mechanism on Spookshow's site http://www.spookshow.net/loco/ccmp15.html) that you might need to grind/mill.

Hope this helps...

Stu

Hi Stu, that is handy. Thank you very much.  Interesting, as if the wheelbase of truck is 0.625", it's about a scale 8" shorter than it ought to be, in N scale.

I don't know if this is significant enough to matter, but added  to lack of DCC, maybe another reason they didn't fly off the shelves.

Cheers, Ben

Interesting pick-up, Ben.

I just did a side-by side comparison of the Atlas & Con-Cor MP15s and the trucks look pretty similar in length so, working on the assumption that Atlas gets it right, I re-checked my measurements and found I was wrong: the distance from dimple to dimple is 0.645" (the distance between truck centers measured 1.805" again on the 2nd try)

...I did say they were bargain basement calipers, right?

Hi Stu

That's a bit closer, about 4 1/2" too short.  Most of my cheapie Bachmann were about the same, 16.5mm or 0.650".  Guessing the compression allows a little room for oversize flanges.  At the other end of the spectrum, Life Like's early GP38-2 trucks were a foot too long (no idea why).  I'll add this to my database of weirdo scratchbuilder information.

Cheers, Ben
