George:  I suspect you're right.  That VW built a railbus wouldn't be at all surprising, and some railway kitbashing one themselves would be practical, but 6-wheel locomotive trucks?  More likely, for a European road, at would have an axle at each end, like their freight wagons.

Thomas:  That doesn't surprise me at all, as many North American railroads did the same thing, with almost any vehicle imaginable.

One of the Colorado railroads had an early Ford with flanged wheels, and drove it to the gas station for fuel.  The local roads were all dirt, so it didn't do any damage, and was easier than bringing the fuel to the railroad.  Everything else burned coal...  C&S I'm thinking, but wouldn't swear to it.
