Those types of fixes are always fun, aren't they?  :D
Sounds like either the chassis halves were screwed together too tightly or something was not quite lined up properly.  I guess the important thing is that it is fixed.

You make a good point here. It's possible that, whoever had this before me might have had it apart, and over-tightened the screws. I purposely backed off on those screws just a tad while re-assembling it, so maybe that was the problem after all. Guess we'll never know for sure... :?

I suppose that you could try tightening the screws some more to see if the problem returns.  :)  But it could have been something like a worm shaft bearing block not seating properly in the chassis and when you loosened the halves iit straightened out.  But I think that you're right that we will probably never know for sure.
