After decades of idle railroad tracks in Marin and Sonoma County, California, it is almost time to ride a train again. I caught this one waiting in San Rafael for a test run to Petaluma.

Very cool. Here's hoping it's a success!

This warms my heart.  I was born in San Rafael and I have very vivid memories of crossing the tracks at 3rd St there, back in the 60s and seeing an NWP switcher parked in front of that station.  If I understand correctly, the current line runs to the Larkspur ferry (true?).  Is there any talk of restoring service to Tiburon or Sausalito?

I tried to google it with no success.  I believe they have the right of way but no rail.  I think they will use the former row from San Rafael to Larkspur.  Didn't check Google Maps.

Service starts between Santa Rosa and downtown San Rafael later this year. Service between San Rafael and Larkspur Landing (near ferry terminal) will be the next phase. ROW is ready and the Cal Park Tunnel construction is complete. I believe they recently secured funding for the Larkspur phase. Track and drainage improvements need to be completed.
