Has anyone looked into these for model photography? It's so small that it might be able to open up all sorts of possibilities (including simply sticking it on a flat car).

I'm kinda tempted to get one to try it out, but I'm concerned about focus distances and depth of field.

Over at MRH there are several threads on the Cube. I believe the Richlawn Railroad guy has one and has used it to shoot video trackside.

35mm? Not quite small enough. :(  But close. Real close. Might be worth hacking or at least trying to get it out of the consumer-friendly case.

If you don't need live video then there are plenty of small DVRs available (down to spy-pen size).  Check eBay or Amazon. I recall discussing those few years ago, when DKS was still around.  He even gutted a GoPro camera to see if it could be used in N scale.

If you don't need live video ...

I need live video. @ 1080p/30. I'm not messing with it until it's there.
