I'm going to volunteer some one if you want technical advise on the Royal Hudson, is Dan MacDougal who gave a clinic at our Trains 2014 show that ended roughly two weeks ago on the restoration of the Hudson.  Dan is very knowledgeable about the Hudson.

I don't know if you are aware of the history of HO Royal Hudsons, but as far as I am aware, roughly three different manufactures put one out and all sold out - Samhongsa, Pacific Fast Mail (made in Korea), and an offering through Van Hobbies, also made in Korea.  The average selling prices was around $900.

I personally think you can put out the 2860 Royal Hudson at a price point of roughly $800, decoder not included, and it will sell well in N scale.  But of course the model has to be quality and a good runner (irrelevant to collectors).  I have an HO 2860 RH sitting in my closet I have given to my son - Samhongsa - which I bought for $1000.

The president of the museum in Squamish BC is very approachable, why not contact him to see if the the museum would be willing to bulk purchase some Royal Hudsons (these models will have to be finished) since this museum is the home of the 2860.  Or at least see if they could be an outlet for your product.

I am open to mechanism suggestions for sure.  There is no point in all of this effort and expense if it's going to be a big paper weight.  I bought an MP years ago based on the measurements being very close to the RH.  The RH has a shorter wheel base than most American Hudsons making commercial models of North American prototypes useless.  I have heard that Kato models are superb runners, and that one them even has the correct valve gear so perhaps this is the way to go?

The Royal Hudson has 75" drivers, spaced 6'7" apart.  Hopefully that can get you started comparing to some Kato locos.

Thanks for your interest.

Craig

For what it's worth Craig, a C57 with conventional drivers might be a good start. While the Japanese prototype had 68.9" drivers, the models are 1/150 scale, which should yield 73.6" at 1/160., possibly a good choice for a 75" drivered Royal Hudson. I don't believe the C62 Hudson comes with conventional spoked drivers, but I'm no JNR expert....
Have fun with this project!

As far as I know, the JNR C62 class Hudson's were not built with spoked drivers. One of the other Hudson classes may have, though.

What 2004 or earlier? That seems somewhat backwards to me. I'd expect 2004 or later. But then I don't know a great deal about AutoCAD.

I suspect because that is the version Craig has access to or uses.

I use really old version of Corel Draw for designing decals (and many more things).  It already does much more than what I need (no reason for an expensive upgrade to the latest version).  But when people send me artwork it has to be saved in the older Corel Draw format.

Hey everyone. I'm surprised but I didn't receive the level of interest I expected. At this time I'm not going to go forward with an effort to get this loco built preffesionally.  I appreciate everyone who offered services. I'll keep going on my kitbash and see what happens in the future. Being the holy grail of n scale steam for me, I'm still confident we'll see it eventually.

Hello Craig,

Put me down for three if resin, two if 3D printed. If resin, I can bash one shell into a 3000-series Jubilee.

I would also use the MP Pacific mechanism as my first choice, although some of the MicroAce Pacific mechanisms may also be appropriate. The Prototype driver size is 75 inches which matches the MP model. I'll have to check the wheelbase length, which is more important for an accurate model in N-scale.

Give it a little time and we should see 30 units...
I also have data and some elevation drawings.

Best regards,

Michael,

I get the following comparative measurements from the MP Pacific and the Royal Hudson erecting drawing:

Lead truck:  MP  32 1/2" wheels, 7'-6" wheelbase; RH 33" wheels, 7'-2" wheelbase
Centreline of cylinders - lead driver centre:  MP  8'-9 5/8"; RH 8'-2"
Driver diameter: MP 71 1/4"; RH 75"  (MP over flanges = 80")
Driver wheelbase: MP 13'-10 3/4"; RH 13'-2"

Cheers,

I don't mind starting the CAD for this project and don't really need a minimum to begin. I enjoy the design work and the challenge. If we have some drawings to start from then we can start there. If nothing else it's a project that could be explored as a 3D printing project if it's not possible to escalate it into a kit.

Cheers

Thanks Craig. I received your PM and replied with my email address. I thought I'd reply to your post here in case my email didn't make it across.

Hi guys, I was just curious as to how this project was going, and if there was any need for more help? I also desire a Royal Hudson, and had been planning on RPing a boiler and tender shell, but would hate to duplicate work being done by someone else. Would love to contribute in any way possible.

I havn't heard anything recently. I've resigned to waiting for a commercial model but if you do a rapid prototype shell I'll grab one for sure. Perhaps a base shell to which we add a bunch of etchings? I know a fellow who may be willing to help with that and spread out over a couple of modellers the cost will be reasonable.
