By the end (75-76) you don't see those trailers anymore, presumably because 40' was getting pretty obsolete.

Randy I would guess it was more about the weight of those trailers - being replaced with lighter sheet and post type styles.

 :)
like that 58/59 or so Ford tractor.
but where is its Fuel tank ?
too bad that pic isn't in color.
  45' trailers:
not sure the exact date, but think they were allowed
  on piggybacks after 78.
the EL trains seemed to be all 40' trailers or less.
and they were loaded with the UPS drop frames after 71
which were mostly 40' or less.
EL could sure run a Pig train.
the NYC Flexi's ran fast until the tracks were mostly slow orders.
don't recall PRR or N&W-LV giving EL too much competition in the
  speed department.
but no one thought it was ODD that N&W was giving a Competitor
most of its eastbound TOFC/COFC traffic instead of its owned EL ?
LV profits went directly to PRR/PC.
   Strange Days indeed.

The fuel tank (hopefully) is along the driver's side of the frame right behind the cab(and before the drive axle) according to some photo's I've seen (my buddy had a '62 at the golf course and it was located there as well.)  In looking through several of the books I have on intermodal and trucking, the 45' trailer became legal nationwide in 1981.  Not to say that they not used before this date, especially out west.

 :?
have read somewhere that far western states allowed 45' highway
trailers sometime around 1970,will look for that refeance.
believe it was in a 45' trailer review.
there were some Trailer Builders who would ship New Trailers by rail,
so have that to consider also.
ex-XTRA Waffle Side Trailer used as an Office/Storage Shed for an Electrical
   Contractor in the 80s.
   Mainline Modeler,December 1985,page68,part of the article"Early Piggyback
  Trailers",Montford Switzer,pages 66-69.
a few interesting pics here, check it out.
