Hi Max,

Yes, I called their San Mateo, California office and asked for help in idetifying what I had. The lady sort of laughed and said the number on the motor was for identifying the combination. She then popped out the motor and gearhead number. The motor number agrees with the spec sheet that I rcv'd, however the spec sheet for the gearhead is for a Faulhaber GH and the number given to me by Maxon is not on the Faulhaber spec sheet. What the heck, I just want to get it going.

Carl

Maxon has no knowledge of that gearhead.  It is a Faulhaber gearhead mated to a Maxon motor.
Motorman does that because he knows how, and he gets the best buys that he can from both companies.
The Faulhaber stainless gearheads are the best there are.
I actually prefer them to the Maxons.   That Faulhaber gearhead is all stainless steel, with all stainless steel
gears inside.  If you hold that motor in your hand, you will see that you can turn the output shaft and
actually reverse-drive the motor through the sun and 3 planetary gears, and it feels like you are turning
air.

What cha got there is a custom-made gear motor with components from two different manufacturers.   Lucky you!

If this link works. It should show you what is inside that gearhead.

Carl,

What is the dimensions in mm for length and diameter of the entire assembly (motor and gearhead unit)?  I'm wanting to know if it would be a good fit for the Hallmark 4-8-4's.

Chris,

thanks that is one tough looking gearbox.

Cral

Phillip,

The dimensions are:

Motor = 10mm diameter

Gearhead = 8mm diameter

Length from back of  motor case to end of output shaft = 33mm

Lenght from end of motor leads to the end of output shaft = 36mm

Hope this helps!

Carl,

Thats exactly what I was looking for.....one more detail.  Length of just the motor, not including the gearhead?

Philip,

Here's a coreless motor/gearhead upgrade in the Hallmark 4-8-4.  You don't need the smaller 8mm gearhead.
There is plenty of room to use 10mm all the way through.

That's a Faulhaber 1016 + 4:1 gearhead.  Diameter is 10mm.  Total length is 16+7 = 23mm.
As you can see, if you are crafty, you can unscrew the gearhead from the motor and then screw them
back together with the original motor mount bracket sandwiched in between.   This is not always trivial.
The Faulhabers do have a plastic front plate on them, so that with care, you can flat-file some of that away to
make up for the .020" or so thickness of the mounting bracket.  But be careful.  If you file away too much of that
plastic housing front, you compromise the structure of the coreless motor and it won't run because
the "basket" (a.k.a. armature) will move ever so slightly, just enough to hit the housing on the inside.
These things are made to incredibly tight tolerances, so if that basket or the shaft bearings are upset the least
little bit, the motor won't run.

Anyway... it works great.

Top speed of the stock Hallmark engine at 12v clocked at 167 scale mph.  The gear-reduced top
speed clocked at 39 mph.  If you want more speed, you can use a 6v Faulhaber and overdrive it to 12v.  You'll get closer
to a top speed of 70 mph that way, and these motors are tough.  Check the current draw, and as long as you are not getting close to their maximum rated current, they will be fine.

Doesn't the model 1016 mean that the motor has a 10mm diameter and it is 16mm long (the body itself)?
. . . 42 . . .

Peteski,

yes you are right. However the unit Phillip asked me about is the one I have pictured. It is a 10x17 Maxon (10mm dia.x 17mm length).

Sorry if I confused things.  The steel Faulhaber motor in MY 4-8-4 engine is a 1016.

The Maxon in Carl's photo is a 1017.  Two different manufacturers, two different sizes.

The gearheads on both motors happen to be Faulhabers.

I finally received my NWSL parts, so I can get back to this project. Problem is I have several projects to work on and can't decide the priority, however I thinks the GS-4 will come in on top as I am anxious to run my Daylight again.

Projects:
1. GS-4 remotor
2. IM AC-12 replace side rods, pins, and valve gear, have parts now.
3. Build new AC-9, have castings as well as the mechanism.
4. Build an SP GS-1, have mechanism and castings.
5. IM F-3's - complete motor & drive shaft swap from IM parts to KATO parts.

I shall have plenty of indoor work for our very hot June which is rapidly approaching.
