UP E unit numbering 1950-1959

With all the new BLI/Presission/Parigon E's I decided to do this 4 part chart as a quick reference and work sheet . 697 wide x 1024 or shorter long are in my UP Diesels file in Pacasa should anybody care to copy them . Exact month and date isn't important to me so that info is not included . Info was gleaned ( not a copy and past ) from " Diesels Of The Union Pacific 1934 to 1982 " by Don Stract

That's nice Richie, to have it all in one set of tables, I thank you, eventhough I have Don Strack's book.

The reason the E8's numbering started w/ 926, and only later reverted to the 900's (if anybody actually cares about such things) is that the low 900's were already occupied by older, passenger equipped and geared F3's. Only when Uncle Pete acquired enough E units and settled on them for all passenger service did the earlier passenger F3's get regeared and renumbered to vacate the 900' series...

BTW, Don Strack's Utah Rails website is an incredible source of photos and information...

Good stuff, Richie. It inspired a sequel to cover 1960 to the end of UP passenger service:

(I don't know why my PNG files won't crop! :| )

Several things of note. Nothing earlier than E7s made it to 1960, and E7s were all gone by '63. Most E8's were scrapped or sold by 1969, and most E9's made it to the end. It's also amazing to see the purchase of new E9's in 1962 and '63. IIRC UP was the last railroad to purchase anything in the EMD bullnose carbody.

A couple of minor corrections to your chart, Richie. First, #987 was off the roster in 1956 along with 992-997. The other was you omitted 989 and 990 (E7A's), and 991 (E3A). Yeah, this stuff makes your eyes roll back in your head if you stare at it long enough.  :-X

I don't model UP but this looks really useful for UP modelers!  I wonder if you guys could provide these charts in something like PDF or XLS format and attach it to one of the threads.  That would be even more useful than a bitmap.

I put the 1960-1971 Excel file up on my server: http://www.everywherewest.com/UP_E_Units_1960-1971.xls

Don't know if the .xls extension will give anybody's browser fits (it works for me, of course), but there it is if you have a way to get it.
