Oil on Rail Before Painting

I've read this in a few places over the years re wiping some oil on the tops of the rail before spray-painting/airbrushing (making track cleaning easier after painting).  Any advice from anyone that's tried this?  What kind of oil?  Is it worth it?

Thanks

I tried it, and it worked great. Used basic 3-in-1 oil. I cut off a circular strip from the top of a white tube sock, and wrapped it around a wooden shim. A couple drops of oil on the tip, run it along the tops of the tracks. Do your painting, and immediately clean the rail with a fresh cloth wet with a few drops of isopropyl alcohol. Wrapped around a shim, this will clean the top of the rails in a few swipes.

It helps to work in small sections. The longer you let the paint dry on the rail, the tougher it is to get off.

If you wipe the paint off with paper towel moistened with solvent, or a BriteBoy as soon as the paint dries (but before it hardens), it will come off really easy.  There should be no need to mess around with oil.

I just scrape the wet paint off of the railheads with a scrap piece of styrene.  Touch up with a Brite Boy after the paint dries, and, done!  Although I know there are some who disagree, I'm not a proponent of oil on the rails.

I've heard that transmission fluid works even better!

Just joking!  ;)
