Asphalt pavement - any suggestions?

This may have been covered before, but I'm looking to model some worn-out asphalt/bitumen/blacktop pavement-- potholes etc.  I'm trying just plain old drywall compound as a test  (I've seen people use spackle as well). 

I'd like suggestions for construction and painting/weathering properly, and/or links if relevant.
