Bman 0-6-0 thoughts?

I searched and got a couple of hits, as well as checking out the spookshow review. I wanted to see if anyone has any advice whether this is worth getting as a first steam Loco. The railway I model has a 0-6-0 and as far as im aware this is the only production model in existence. The price is good, but I see people recommend ditching the stock tender and using a spectrum for better pickup and DCC compatibility? How far off the mark am I here?  :ashat:

Kind Regards,

Mike

I've used several of the new, split frame, "black geared," 0-6-0 for several projects and have been very happy with them. they do take some wear in time, and you should be extremely predigest on getting a good running one, because Q/C can be hit and miss.

If the giant electric motor sticking out of the cab doesnt offend you, some of my steam head friends agree that the newest ones can be made to run nicely.

I can be pretty sure this is true....
you will be hard pressed to find an alternative that come new in a box.

If possible test run it, you want slow and even.
be sure it has blackened side rods.

If you can afford the slight extra get the 2-6-2, and remove the lead and trailing trucks
photos and forumers have pointed out that the tender is correct for the USRA 0-6-0

If you get a marginal one, most times a tune up will make it into a pretty good runner.

hmmmm.
I wonder where the reviews I read are.....

Thank you everyone - yes I looked at the spookshow review. Victor thank you for the advice about the spectrum 2-6-2 I will take a look. I am not a die hard prototype modeler and perhaps this will be good enough for my purposes.

Kind regards

This engine is pretty good, and I would recommend it. Also, I highly recommend you use the modified Spectrum tender, as it will provide tender pickup and makes this little engine run really good; Spookshow has a how to in his review if you did not already see it.

What's the word on whether the new Bachmann mech can fit a Minitrix B6 shell?  I imagine there would be some Dremeling and insulating required.

Hmmmm.....didn't think about that, I don't see any reason it shouldn't be made to work, Both the mech and the shell have quite a bit of "meat" that could be removed without causing problems.

@Dave Vollmer been wanting to do that for a little while have the mini true shells just never got around to getting a 0-6-0.
Though I may soon since the senator project is on hold while I wait to see if the cars  can be casted.

Let me know how it goes, because you'll probably get there before I do.

Just compared my older 0-6-0 (already the newest version with blackened wheels etc) with a newly acquired one and discovered the engine body to be made from a new mold. It still looked the same but the details are finer: narrower smokestack, smaller daintier bell etc. It definitely looks more model train like than toy train like now.
