Milwaukee Road Heavyweight color question.

Howdy.

Researching the colors used on MLW Heavyweights and am finding conflicting information on the roof colors.  Understand that when the Hawiatha was in play those cars had grey roofs.  Photo's show standard issue MLW Heavyweights with dark roofs...looking black, but there are plenty of posts elsewhere stating they were painted brown.  Any ideas...what color brown would that be?  Matt over at FVM has been a help nailing down the body colors for consistancy...the roof has been difficult to nail down.

I will let the Milwaukee guys answer, but personally, I'd get a lot more excited if you we're inquiring about the colors of two-tone grey Pullmans .... Hint hint  8)

The paired window coaches in orange with a maroon window band and no maroon letterboard with a black roof (the 1951 scheme) would be fantastic because that's what the Milwaukee ran in Chicago commuter service over both the North and West lines.  Atlas has already done the torpedo tube Geeps that pulled them.  I met my Dad every evening when he come home on these cars from his job in the Loop and rode them myself to my first jobs since they still ran a few with the Bi-level gallery cars when they were short handed in the late '60's/ early 70's.

I don't know that any other heavyweight body styles were painted in the 1951 scheme so you would probably need to do the others in the orange with maroon letterboard and brown roof but a separate run of the 1951 era commuters cars would be a great special run.

Just paint them in the Armour Yellow scheme and problem solved.

Shoot altohorn25 a message. He can tell you.  He's painted a ton of the MTL Heavyweights in Milwaukee colors.

My research for this car (Watertown) seems to indicate a dark grey that was black after use....

Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

That's the 1951 scheme referenced in my post above.  IMHO the best of the schemes used.  Atlas/Rivarossi already did the Maroon letter board scheme and while the MT heavyweights are far superior castings, it would be nice to have the MT's factory painted in the maroon window band scheme since there are still tons of the Atlas/Rivarossi cars floating around in the aftermarket.

PLEASE don't do Armour yellow.  Only a few heavyweights were hijacked into that scheme.

"MILW Yellow" is the Harvest/Persian Orange that we are all accustomed to.  They just called it yellow.  Milw called the maroon color "CM&StP Standard Red" as well for a time before switching the nomenclature to Royal Maroon.

....or, just "roll your own"......they paint up really "purrrdy"..... ;)

Since I am a closet MR fan, my limited time for custom painting would have to be spent on NP projects I have lined up for years to come!!  :) I would look to buy some factory units from MT.

I don't have any way to post photos to this, so I can't show you guys what I've done (I've done an entire heavyweight train in the mid 40's scheme with the brown roofs).  Sorry.  All I can say it that the MT cars are great to work on as they break down into their components very easily.
