Silled tank car question

I gotta ask a dumb question...  the walkways at the base of silled tank cars; were they wood planking or metal grating?  Or both?  I'm thinking, if they were metal grating, that would so improve the look of a model.  Of course, no one makes etchings for that, so it will be a PITA to do...

The Gold Medal Models roofwalks can be kitbashed into almost any metal walkway.  If you use one for a Center Flow covered hopper you may be able to get by with two cuts by using diagonally opposite ends.

As for the prototype, either is acceptable.  Wood roofwalks were never required to be replaced with metal, so if the car is old enough to use wood, it could keep it until retirement.
