Yep. Railroads can't paint general service cars with logos and colours of shippers.

For the "why?" of the rule, imagine if you will that Mickey's Cheese is also a customer of WSOR. They request a boxcar for loading, and the one that's available is the one with Sargento Cheese's (their competitors) logo. If you were Mickey, would you be impressed to be loading your product into a vehicle advertising your competition?

Does this rule prevent Sargento from having a fleet of boxcars/reefers with their logo on the side?

Hmm... let me get Perry
Mason to expound on
this matter...

Two scientists create a teleportation ray, and they try it out on a cricket. They put the cricket on one of the two teleportation pads in the room, and they turn the ray on.
The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.

Thanks, Steve for the suggestion of Wig Wag. Unfortunately they don't have either.

Ed, the company I work for, purchased the WSOR about a year ago. My information is that it was merely a promotional car for one of their customers but really served as a "Christmas tree carrying car on the annual Santa Express.

I suspect the problem with the Sargento Cheese boxcar is that it was WSOR owned, not Sargento owned. If it was a Sargento car, then it's only going to really have the potential to be used by Sargento (in theory); same with the Tropicana cars, since I suspect they're only being used for Tropicana traffic

No, the company that owns or leases the car can have their logo on as big as they want. See any of those old elevator-owned covered hopper cars with Pullman-Standard, US Railway Equipment, Union Tank Car, etc. leasing reporting marks.

If Sargento owns/leases the car they have full control of it. If they ship in railroad owned cars, the cars supplied are at the railroads discretion (as long as it matches the configuration requested).

The rule was more about the railroads having their own cars with all sorts of unrelated third-party lettering.

Keep in mind that this car was a model before it was the real thing. The car was done by Athearn in HO first. WSOR liked the car and then copied it. I think this was shortly after they had worked with Athearn on the anniversary car that WSOR also ran.

This was a reverse foobie. It started as a model then became real.
