IM F units are champs, can't speak to the SD's but the F's are wonderful.
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

That is why I think a n SD40-2 is not far off.  With the CN units tooled, they are most of the way there...

A GMDD SD40-2W and an EMD SD40-2 are entirely different animals.  About the only pieces that could be re-used are the trucks, mechanism, and dynamic brake hatches.

Who'da thunk an N scale dealers tease about the -2 project being an HO project.  :(

I am not confident at all we will see a major SD40-2 project in n scale anytime in the near future.  Their F Units have been champs. The Tunnel motors not so good, bu wehave done ok with the SD45-2 and out customers tend to like them. Either way, IF and that's a big if anybody brings on an SD40-2 soon, we won't have  a choice as too who manufactur's them, only whether we buy them or not.

One is made in Canada, eh?  I think that is a bit of an overstatement.  The cab is obviously different, but something servicable could come from fellow IM products like the tunnel motors or SD-45 products.  Just a hood to tool to patch on the fans and DB housing.  Gives them flexibility for different phases of SD40.  Mix and match to come up with tooling and your in business.  I see this as a glass half full.

Back to the  :ashat: IM vent.  I'm going to write to them, thank them for the seemingly endless Canadian products, and ask them not to do SD 40 in Conrail, etc. and to do a double batch of CP instead

Not just the cab... the long hood is different on a -2W, the sill, stepwells, anitclimbers are different on a -2W.  Yes, IM could reuse the dynamic hatches, but those have been incorrect since they first tooled them, so hopefully they'll actually tool a correct one this time around... and a blower duct that actually has beads on it too (the one correct thing about the -2Ws... GMDD never used a beaded blower duct)

Ok but with some detail errors? If you mean a big dent in the cab roof, a shell that won't stay on, a huge gap between the cab and hood and handrails with burrs from the dust and dirt that was painted over, then I've got a locomotive to sell you...

Hmmm ... my Conrail SD45-2 is fine.  As are my ABBA set of Erie FTs and my PC F7As.  Aside from that though, it's nice to have the plastic.  And the shells will fit over Kato mechanisms as well if I remember correctly, for those who have a preference.

Scott Lupia picked up a pair of the EL SD45-2 when they came out.  He wasn't happy with the paint which he felt was too thick, so he stripped and repainted the units.  After doing that, he's been quite happy with them.

That's the thing. I don't want the unit that IS 80s Conrail to have to a fleet of fixer uppers.

I'm with Ed on this one.  My four Conrail SD45-2's were bad.  Paint was thick and there was dust in the paint on the handrails.  I also thought IM did not render the EL fuel tanks correctly.  If I would have looked closer, I most likely would have seen the other items Ed mentioned.  I returned them right after I received them, and have not looked back.  Too bad as I had the pleasure of riding in these units when they were pushers on the Pittsburgh Line.  Absolute brutes when it came to shoving.  Thanks.

As a member of Generation X, I want to forget pretty much everything about the 80s.

I do forget most of the 1980s - I was only 8 by the time they ended.  ;)
