Notice the lack of grafiti

Probably because it's an ore train that keeps shuttling... There's plenty of grafitti in Europe - even on passenger cars, although it's not quite as bad.

It's interesting though, since yards are certainly in more urban areas there and if from my travels there are a lot fewer police around. I think it's only Germany and Austria that have the equivalent of "railroad police". I am pretty sure in Switzerland train security is contracted out to the company that cleans the floors in stations.  Never saw RR police around at all in the Netherlands, France or Finland, other places I hung around stations taking pictures.

Conversion cars have been around for a long time.  The PRR had some cars with couplers which would fit NYC subway cars.  Can't find any photos yet but they hauled them in trains to NYC.  I'm guessing that back when the conversion from link and pin to knucles couplers, there were quite a few conversions to make everything work.
