Dave, I liked your old layout as much as the new one. Had these old photos saved before you joined up at The Railwire.

I see a door in my future.

The closest I got to a train this weekend was watching a north-bound CSX stack train crossising the Occaquain River iN Woodbridge from the 10th fairway at the the Osprey's Golf Course.  Played 18 holes there yesterday.  great new clubs - bad operator errors.  Ended up will north of par, but had a great day (including Vitamin Y).

No pictures. ACME Labs is closing in on the paint completion of last LRV GP20. Began working on the first car "rebuild" for NKP (SuessCaboose). Began finalizing C&O Passenger Car lettering  (no heralds -those can be had from MS 60-401) should have something in a week or two. Also began work on getting the C&O RDC lettering font.

Dave,
Ditto what Chris said...  The old one looks a little more switcherrific, while the new is more scenery and running oriented.  Maybe you could get another door and rebuild that to put on the far end of the Jack's Run bit, with a connection under the mountain...  That way you could nuke the coal mine from the current rig (which you had discussed at one point) and replace it with a more urban industry.  A building like this one in Columbia...

I'm sure they had rail service at some point, hard to see where now though.  Then you can build a couple of coal tipples to go on the new "old" section... (Then you'll need more Laurel Valley hoppers!)

Maybe it works as a U shape, with Enola at the bottom of the U...  Just a thought!

Lee,

That layout featured 11" radius mainline curves with 9.75" on sidings.  The main also had 3% grades.  Those facts, along with just generally bad tracklaying, led to its demise.  You are correct in the assessment of the switching potential.

I've thought through a number of senarios for future expansion.  IF I did another stand-alone door layout opposite Enola from the Juniata Division, I'd be inclined to do something very industrial like Steelton or maybe York.  Both layouts would then operate essentially as independent entities with self-contained loops but no grand looping capability.  That could be added with considerable work.
For now, I'm not expanding any further.  Not until I get closer to retirement.  I've got an assignment to Florida this winter, a.k.a. The "No Basement State."

Ed,

Nah.  I know it way too well.  Every compromise would bug me.  Besides, other than meets w/ Strasburg, there's only really the lumber yard.

I want some serious industry...  Maybe some local business.  Still want to add Paddy's Pub with a theater next door playing "The Nightman Cometh."

Do a part of the Cumberland Valley line as far as Mechanicsburg, PA.  The Navy Supply Depot could supply many loads in and out.  Besides, it's almost next door to Enola.

I got that U33C's handrails painted and changed the weathering on it. I didn't get the effect I wanted, but it still looks prototypical (looks like a unit in helper service that's been behind some coal trains). Guess I'll leave it alone.

Unfortunately I stopped because I have some weird bug that I can't get over, and it really hit hard.

If N scale had good SD40-2s, C30-7s, U30Cs, SD45s, SD40s, and SW10s; I'd be in N scale.

I've been doing some serious research into the coal mine at Egypt, NC, and I'm seeing some late Raleigh and Western and early NS (1900-1920) action as potential, and I can do it with what's available in N scale with some scratchbuilding and kitbashing of freight cars.  The locomotives are already essentially available.  This would make an awesome foray into world of the door layout.
