Seems to me the wheel stops should be set a bit more inboard...  Methinks a coupler would wipe out the fence by the time the wheels hit the stops...  just sayin'....

Ha ha , I noticed that too , but I figured I better not finger point at a far better modeler than myself . :-\

The wheel stops are roughly positioned more or less according to where they are on a prototype trestle. (I'll admit to doing it by eye, and they may be a bit too close to the fence.) I suspect that, as modelers, our eyes are probably gauged for the model world, where the coupler would indeed collide with the fence, whereas real couplers, being much smaller and closer to the carbody, the stops are probably closer to the fence than we may expect.

Yet another clash of fine scale fidelity and model train functionality.  Being as the trestle is abandoned, you're off the hook either way!

Ok I decided that I may want one of these so I started working on one....now I just need to build an industry to use it at. I added couplers to mine figuring that they added coupler pockets so that they could rap a chain around the knuckle and drag it with a forklift if needed, and that train crews could easily move it if it was in the way.

I used an Atlas 70 ton truck, and FVM 33" wheels. Deck is brass, and the iron is misc styrene shapes that I found. I used sewing pins for the hinges on the ramps. Off to the paint and rust shop next.

It's interesting to see that none are exactly the same , more true to what would have taken place in the real world . This is also hard to define as it's not really MOW equipment . Other such oddities would be movable end ramp loaders for early multi deck auto flats .

I agree 100%. IMO, this is what modeling is about. Not why didn't X produce anything in my road name, or did X copy something Y made. I think we ought to have more of these challenges. Maybe even bring back the weathering grunge matches. They bring out the best in the people who participate.

Personally, I liked the arbitrary nature of this one.  It's a project that transcends era, and can be put to use either as an active part of a scene, or as David did, a discarded piece of railroad history...

Organized challenges are nice, but this one was really fun and out of the blue.

Totally agree. Actually, I wasn't necessarily advocating organized challenges; more like hinting that it would be nice if people were more keen for such opportunities. I know it's impossible to mandate "accidents" like this, but maybe if there was a conscious effort to look for them more actively, they might start occurring more often on their own.
