All this talk of micro layout has got me thinking.  I found this from a Google search:

(from http://www.carendt.com/microplans/).

I am thinking that in the same space, with basically the same track plan, I could do the Dismal Swamp RR in Nn42.  The layout is small enough that I would be able to handlay the track (c25 would be good here).  Of course I would have to build all the equipment, but it would be a cool little layout, especially for my apartment.

Thoughts and suggestions to make this easier/more fun?

Thank you ñiao, Rowan , Iain and John ( atsf_arizona ) for taking some of your valuable time to reply and for the kind words.

ñiao, what a coincidence that you built a diorama with ( almost ) the same engine and rolling stock.
My engine is a Class 81 ( 4 axles ) while yours has 3.
What is the ( blurred ) blue car in the background ? a DKW ( Auto-Union) ?

Now that my microlayout 23" X 11" layout is finished, I'm completing   another  minimalist  N scale small oval layout ( it was put on hold in order to complete the switching one )  and I'm planning another switching layout ( on an Ikea 12" X 32" shelf ) for my DB Class 81 engine.
Who need a basement empire   to have fun  :)
Iain, I'm a little confused here. Matson's landing is an HO scale layout, will Dismal Swamp RR be N scale?
Could you please tell me what Nn42 is ? is it a particular gauge for N scale ( such as HOn30 ? ).

Jacques

The Dismal Swamp RR was 42" gauge; Z scale track is 41" wide in N scale.  So yes, I would be doing a narrow gauge N scale layout.

No Auto Union. It is a Citroën DS - one of the (in the eye of the beholder) most beautiful cars ever built.

In my youth, I was a big fan of Citroën and Panhard, and fixed and drove many of them (2CV, BX, CX, Panhard Dyna). Sadly, I never could get my hands on a goddess (the French pronunciation for DS) good enough for me.  :'(
