Is there any external difference? I have a Kato Ho scale c44-9w that I would like to paint to match an AC4400CW, would I be way off base if I did so?
How long will it be before they show us how to add DCC to a tree?
they are the same locomotive externally.

No, they're definately not.See the pics in ednadolski's post above.
The 8165 and 8183 are C44-9Ws while the 124 and 154 are AC4400CWs.The most notable difference is the large inverter cabinet behind the cab on the conductor's side on the AC4400CW, while the "-9" just has a much smaller air conditioner unit. Note also that the air intakes along the top of the carbody behind the cab (on both sides) are different between the two models.
the rear panel door size and configuration on the engineer's side are different and some are different on different phases. i spent way too much time on this about a decade ago. i dislike GE locos. not that the EMD's are not without phase issues.-Steve
