2nd Run Walthers 0-8-0 impressions and project

I bought an undec from the 2nd run with front steps to bash into a N&W S1. The pin connection to the tender is HUGE! i'm not sure how I'm gonna make the tender couple closer (gotta go back to the Atlas forum and read Max's threads!). I have not tested drawbar yet as I don't have any track laid at the moment. I had to use long needle nose pliers to plug the tender in or remove it. :-X

I did test it on some Unitrak to make sure the mofo ran. Out of the box it runs pretty slow, but with some "herky jerkiness" - I hope it's true that it will run smoother once broken in. I wish they'd charge $10 more and stop using these crappy 3 pole motors. ::) As of now the slow speed performance is "adequate".

I've already began removing stuff for the bash:

I'm torn between trying to make it look as built or with the modified tender as it would have had by the mid 1950s:

bad angle view of S1a loco with tender (N&W built this unit this way, but the S1 tenders were modified to sort of match the later S1a):

This bell from the Atlas 2-8-8-2 might be good enough . I think it angles up a bit though . Ebay search for 2-8-8-2 bell will find it  ,

You need another air pump. I say go for the modified tender, do you have drawings?

I have 2 of those plugs if you need them, first thing I did was rip out all that crap from the tender.

I have to modify the tender either way so I probably will go with the later version. I do have drawings of various sorts.

The air pumps are both on one side so I guess I'd need to move one to the left side. ;)

Hey also remove a rung from the front ladders and lower the first part of the walkway over the cylinders.

That reminds me I still have add ladders to mine...

I just got the B&M version from the second run, yesterday.  Runs smooth as silk and quietly.  My only complaint would be that it appears to be just as enemic on grades as the first run.  But, I don't mind tinkering.
