Norm,

Make sure you take the clear covering off the foam before you glue it down.  Sounds like what happened to me when I forgot that step.

What he described sounded more like he used a solvent based adhesive. I know that there's a clear Liquid Nails out that's solvent based.

Indeed.  Latex adhesive caulk would also work.  I've used this to lay track and it has just the right amount of "tack".

Yeah I think that's what it was.  I don't have the tube anymore so I can't recall exactly which liquid nails one it was, but no doubt it's the one of which you're thinking.  When I pulled the old foam up it had the melted/burned look to it.

This is the right one: http://www.liquidnails.com/ViewProductDetails.do?productId=34 I used it this weekend for securing the foam to wood.

I was at "Walmart's" as the hillbillies where' I'm from call it, and I picked up the cheap DAP all purpose adhesive that said it was safe for foam board, it hasn't burnt my foam up yet so I appear to be over that hurdle.  You'd think sticking some foam to a door wouldn't be any kind of hassle, but it might have helped if I had read a little before I started slinging glue.

Really even white glue or carpenters yellow glue works just as well.
