Last year I had the opportunity poke around the former PRR Girard Point grain elevator in Philly, courtesy of the company doing the demolition. I thought my group was going to get a restricted, guided tour...instead we were told to just be careful and we could go wherever we wanted. So up I went...I finally decided to do something with my photos from that day, so here's my tribute video on Youtube:
When I was a little kid, whenever a trip to the Jersey Shore or a Phillies game took my parents' car over the Girard Point Bridge, my face would always be plastered against the window to look at Tidewater. I was fascinated by the massive, weatherbeaten structure that stood near the confluence of the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers. It is the building that is more or less responsible for my love of industrial archeology and preservation, and a trip through Philly on I-95 will never be the same without seeing Tidewater languishing on the banks of the Schuylkill, in defiance of the forces that left it empty and idle.
