There is a thread in here somewhere, but it is a foam brush with a little paint on it.  A light touch leaves dots, a heavier touch leaves a mottled texture.

The fade coat is an airbrushed light tan.

The brush is just one of the foam brushes that you can pick up at home depot. I pull off and use a piece of it.

When I started with the technique, I completely over did it.  But, this taught me how to control it for more subtle variations.

Oh, one more thing:

On some of the 'dots', you can see a little rust streak.  This is made by gently rubbing a brush damp (barely damp) with 70% alcohol straight down over the 'dot'.  Wait a minute or two for the paint to dry, or the alcohol will completely remove the dot.
