Weekend Update - March 4, 2007

I took delivery of our brand new Yard Office test shots this last week and was able to assemble the undecorated version to test the parts.

The final product (due in May/June) will come fully assembled, colored, and with window glass.  This isn't a formal announcement, just sharing my (inside) work from this past week.

I forget what I've posted. I think this is new.

We're crossing the DelMar High Bridge. That's the Linear Accelerator in the middle left, which we've just climbed past. Above the accelerator is deck three on the east wall. There is no deck 2 on that wall.

We'll return, after a long while, going the other direction on the Eades Bridge, just to the left of the DelMar.

The wall to the right is only a few inches away from the bridge. The bridges were supposed to be a foot away from the wall, but I got lazy: it's easier to build against the wall than free-standing. Live and learn. I'll probably Photoshop it out in the future.

To the lower left is the East Harbor, the Navy base.

There were guard rails on the Eads Bridge. They got hopelessly bent when I fell on the bridge. You can just see where they were attached by the darker bands near the rails.

Anybody have watched the local news lately.
Although Japanese TV vans, with some nice decals the now perfect for my San Francisco Bay Area layout.



If there is interest I will even do some local TV vans for other regions.

The B'mann H16-44 runs real well.  Good slow speed performance and pulls well.

Also made another bare tree to goad Ed one more time.   ;D  See the "More Bare Trees" thread.

This weekend I've been working on a second Trainworx D&RGW caboose kit.

Erik,  Your layout is Da BOMB.  I love the flow of the trackwork, and the cityscape/mountain vista mix.  Craig, that office looks enough like Bayard to find a home on my layout someday...

It's hard to tell from this shot, but the next part of the WM layout got one step closer to completion...

This isn't the layout room, it's actually the bedroom downstairs.  Those of you who have been following the saga will know that this room has to be gutted and refinished so my wife and I can move into it temporarily while our room gets gutted and refinished.  Then, my daughters will move down from the other part of the attic, which will then return to my son as his room, moving him out of the layout room, so I can finish building the layout!!

The clock has begun ticking on the Five Year Plan!

Meanwhile, I painted another Laurel Valley GP-20 to help with the chore of hauling Somerset coal to Baltimore...



I also ordered a Bachmann H-16-44 (B&O) to help with switching duties at the paper mill.  I'm looking forward to seeing how well it runs once a chip is added.

As for the basic construction, "someday" needs to occur before the Timonium show in mid-April--yikes!

My own train on the North Raleigh N Track layout:


The Antique Barn had a bunch of MT cars for under $10 a piece.  I bought a crapload of hoppers for $50.  Once I get paint, many will be painted up for the Clinch River, with the rest going to Pholl Gual for coke service.

I also finally got a full set of MDC 50' Overland cars.  The coach and sleeper can be kitbashed into cars that Norfolk Southern, A&NC, and A&EC had.

I need to find another sleeper, take thirty feet from that and add it to this one.  I also need to make enclosed vestibules at the ends.  The windows need a little work, but not as much as I had at first feared.

How about a handlaid No 12?

Messed up the frog a bit, but I know what not to do next time (like cutting off the rails just because they looked to be too long).

Well, not modeling, but modeling related. I finally got a new camera, a Nikon D40, and I love it. I took it out yesterday and took some bridge pics.

The ice is starting to jam in the Allegheny, and in some areas it's nearly over the banks now. The first pic is of the Pennsy's Clarion River bridge, where the Clarion dumps into the Allegheny at Parker. This is on the former Pittsburgh to Oil City line. I've always liked the half-girder, half-truss design.



And this is the B&O bridge across the Allegheny at Foxburg, about two miles upstream from Parker. This was on the B&O's Butler-Mt. Jewett line. This bridge, sadly, is slated for demolition  . Oddly, the bridge is being destroyed and replaced as part of a smalltown development project from the geniuses in Harrisburg. They're trying to develop it as a "tourist area" of Pennsylvania history, and doing that by destroying everything historical they can find and replacing them with reinforced concrete.



Anyway, this bridge is really neat. It's a one-laner, so you have to be careful crossing in the fog. The trains went on top, automobiles beneath.
